Snake sex is every bit as peculiar as you would expect

Pheromone-induced current was not observed with buffer solution or Harderian gland homogenate without pheromone. The biggest exceptions to that rule that we have observed are blood pythons and short-tailed pythons; females have big well-developed hemipenial homologs that they can evert. Males have just four months to eat and mate but, for up to one month of that, they go without food to search for a female. Were comparison possible, the everted hemipenes of male blood pythons are bigger, with more structure and more vascularization than the relatively smooth, pale, everted hemipenial homologs of females. The measure of the penetration of the probe into the base of the tail is the number of subcaudal scales spanned by that distance, counted from the vent posterior to the scale at the level of the maximum penetration of the probe. Rivas vividly recalls watching a male green anaconda persistently pursue a large female and later have sex with her, disregarding other mating opportunities nearby. An associated finding of the present study is that the female sex pheromone, which is insoluble in aqueous solutions, became soluble in the presence of Harderian gland homogenate.
This latter observation suggests that normally Harderian gland secretions facilitate delivery of the pheromone and perhaps other nonpolar biologically active molecules to the VNO. Males seem to be drawn to these reproductive benefits: they prefer to court larger females. Abstract The vomeronasal organ VNO is important for activating accessory olfactory pathways that are involved in sexually dimorphic mating behavior. Next interview top model sex movie
